Jay-Z and D’Angelo Collaborate for First Time on ‘I Want You Forever’

Must Read

JAY-Z has teamed up with D’Angelo for a new song titled “I Want You Forever.” The nine-minute collaboration is lifted from the newly released soundtrack to the JAY-Z-produced biblical comedy-drama “The Book of Clarence.”

Crafted in collaboration with musician and filmmaker Jeymes Samuel, who wrote and directed The Book of Clarence, “I Want You Forever” provides a musical journey that mirrors the movie’s narrative.

In a statement, Samuel said the story and music for The Book of Clarence were “percolating” in his mind even while working on previous projects.

“There was never a question as to whether I would compose the score and write and perform on the soundtrack, as well as write and direct the movie,” he stated. “It was all one amazing journey where one depended on the other.”

During a chat with Samuel on X (formerly Twitter), Jay-Z discussed the foundation of the song and the addition of D’Angelo being an afterthought.

“Someone like D’Angelo, he moves in his own speed and his own time, so there’s no planning there,” said Jay-Z. “You can’t plan that, you can’t say, ‘OK, I’ve got this song, come over Tuesday.’ It just has to happen like that. The circumstances, the vibes, the music, everything has to be in a perfect space for something like this to happen. Obviously, we haven’t collaborated for our entire careers, so it was meant for this moment right here.”

“The Book of Clarence” is out now in theaters. Other artists featured on the soundtrack include Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, Jorja Smith, Doja Cat, Adekunle Gold, Yemi Alade, and more.
