Alex Collins, a former National Football League (NFL) running back, tragically lost his life in a fatal motorcycle accident on Sunday night (Aug. 13) in Florida.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit reported that the accident occurred around 10:20 PM in Lauderdale Lakes. Collins, 28 was riding a 2004 Suzuki GSX-600K when the incident took place.
Preliminary information from the ongoing investigation reveals that a Chevrolet Suburban, driven by a woman, made a turn that crossed into the lane Collins was traveling in, resulting in a collision with the rear passenger side of the SUV.
Despite the swift response of emergency responders, Collins was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman driving the Suburban remained at the site and is cooperating with law enforcement as they continue to probe the details of the crash.
Alex Collins had a notable NFL career spanning five seasons. He achieved significant success during his time with the Baltimore Ravens, particularly in 2017 and 2018. The Ravens, deeply affected by his passing, fondly remember him as a person who radiated positivity and kindness. He was known for his warm smile and the genuine joy he shared with those around him.
“With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Alex Collins,” the Ravens said in a statement Monday. “Always quick to greet everyone with a smile, he was a genuinely kind person who carried a special joy and passion wherever he went. May Alex always be remembered for the light and love he brought to so many people in his life.”
Collins started his NFL journey with the Seattle Seahawks after being selected in the 2016 NFL Draft from the University of Arkansas. He played with the Seahawks during his rookie season and later returned for the 2020 and 2021 NFL seasons. His overall NFL career included 50 games, during which he accumulated 1,997 rushing yards, 467 receiving yards, and scored a total of 19 touchdowns.
“Alex was a joy to be around and someone whose light shined brightly,” coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. “I’ll always remember him for being a great teammate who had an uplifting spirit that impacted everyone he encountered. He was also a smart player who ran with unlimited determination, and he contributed to a lot of our success during his time in Baltimore. We send our heartfelt condolences and support to Alex’s family. May he now rest in God’s eternal peace.”
In 2022, Alex Collins took a hiatus from professional football before making a return this year as a member of the Memphis Showboats in the United States Football League. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to injury, leading to his placement on the injured reserve list.
At the age of 28, Alex Collins’ untimely passing has left the NFL community and fans mourning the loss of a talented athlete known for his positive spirit and contributions to the sport.
In a statement released by the Seahawks, Collins’ family said information on his funeral arrangements would be forthcoming.
“Alex was cherished by his family and friends as well as supporters from all around the world,” the family said. “All who truly know him can attest to his drive, determination, and larger-than-life personality.
