J. Cole surprised his fans with a new song this week titled ‘Procrastination (Broke). According to footnotes shared by the rapper, the song was recorded over a J. Cole type beat he found on YouTube.
“This is some sh-t that would normally stay in the vault, but I don’t want to hold onto the music like that no more. This is for you and whoever else need to hear it. God bless bro and keep doing what you do,” Cole says in a message to the song’s producer Bvtman.
The song’s title, premise and accompanying notes centers around J. Cole’s struggles with inspiration. The multi-platinum selling rapper is now a millionaire and no longer possess the same hunger that made him a global star.
“It don’t help that I’m rich now, So that means that I don’t gotta deal/With stress of these creditors, callin’ my cellular/Like that young rapper that don’t got a deal,” he raps.
Earlier this month fans deduced the North Carolina native had begun working on his seventh album, the follow up to 2021’s The Off-Season after he wiped his Instagram page. Cole confirms the rumors, and reveals he’s struggling to find motivation. “I write these words aimlessly/But not without hope, That somehow I’ll stumble on somethin’ that’s dope,” Cole raps.
He later adds, “And I still relate to that procrastination for tasks/‘Cause I need to finish this album.”
Towards the tail end of the song, Cole unselfishly admits that his songs would no longer “hit like it hit” now that he’s “far removed from the struggles of every day folks.”
In his message to Bvtman, Cole explained how his perceived lack of motivation led him to YouTube.
“On a day when I couldn’t find much motivation, I was looking for anything to inspire me. Out of curiosity, I typed in ‘J. Cole type beat’ into YouTube. Yours was the first I saw. I pressed play, focused, and wrote this.”
