Hall of Fame winger and two-time NHL MVP Bobby Hull has passed away at the age of 84. The Blackhawks and the NHL Alumni Association announced Hull’s death on Monday (January 30) saying, Hull “delivered countless memories to our fans, whom he adored. Generations of Chicagoans were dazzled by Bobby’s shooting prowess, skating skill and overall team leadership that led to 604 career goals, a franchise record that remains to this day. We send our deepest sympathies to the Hull family.”

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in a statement called Hull “a true superstar with a gregarious personality.”

“When Bobby Hull wound up to take a slapshot, fans throughout the NHL rose to their feet in anticipation and opposing goaltenders braced themselves,” Bettman said. “During his prime, there was no more prolific goal-scorer in all of hockey. … We send our deepest condolences to his son, fellow Hockey Hall of Famer Brett; the entire Hull family; and the countless fans around the hockey world who were fortunate enough to see him play or have since marveled at his exploits.”

Bobby Hull was a popular Canadian professional ice hockey player born on January 3, 1939, in Point Anne, Belleville, Canada. He developed a love for ice hockey at a young age and had a solid debut year finishing second in the Calder Memorial Trophy.

Initially, Bobby wore numbers 16 and 7 as a Black Hawk but later switched to his famous number 9, a tribute to his childhood idol Gordie Howe— a Canadian professional ice hockey player.

Hull rose through the ranks to become one of the most sought-after ice hockey players. During his 23-year career, he played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets, and Hartford Whalers in the National Hockey League. He is considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time. His blonde hair, skating speed, scoring ability, end-to-end rushes, and ability to shoot the puck at very high velocity all earned him the name ‘The Golden Jet’.

Hull ended his career having played in 1,063 NHL games, accumulating 610 goals, 560 assists, 1,170 points, and 640 penalty minutes. His number 9 jersey has been retired by the Black Hawks, the Jets, as well as the Arizona Coyotes.

In 1978, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983. Bobby received the Wayne Gretzky International Award in 2003 and was named one of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’ in history in 2017.
