Questlove is not a fan of the ugly back-and-forth between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. In an Instagram post with the caption, “Here We Are Now… Entertain us,” the Roots legend criticized both rappers for airing each other’s dirty laundry and making salacious allegations that involve family members.
“Nobody won the war,” Questlove wrote. “This wasn’t about skill. This was a wrestling match level mudslinging and takedown by any means necessary — women & children (& actual facts) be damned.”
He continued by calling out rap fans for fueling the feud: “Same audience wanting blood will soon put up ‘rip’ posts like they weren’t part of the problem. Hip Hop is truly dead.”
Questlove’s comments come a day after Drake’s bodyguard was badly injured in a drive-by attack outside Drake’s Toronto home. Law enforcement reports state that the bodyguard was found unconscious and was rushed to a local hospital, where he is undergoing surgery.
Kendrick and Drake have both made serious accusations in their numerous diss tracks. On “Family Matters,” Drake made several unsubstantiated claims about Kendrick, including the suggestion that one of his children was actually fathered by longtime producer and business partner Dave Free. Drake also accused Kendrick of physically assaulting his fiancée, Whitney Alford.
“Your baby mama captions always screamin, ‘save me’/You did her dirty all her life, you tryna make peace/I heard that one of them little kids might be Dave Free,” Drake raps.
In response, Kendrick alleged Drake is hiding a daughter on “Meet the Grahams” and alluded to longtime rumors that he has sexual relations with underage girls on “Not Like Us.”
Drake subsequently denied Kendrick’s incendiary accusations on “The Heart Part 6,” suggesting he is too big of a celebrity to have evaded such charges throughout the duration of his career.
While Questlove is critical of the back-and-forth, Lamar is experiencing a significant career boost. His new DJ-Mustard produced single “Not Like Us” has broken Spotify’s record for the most streamed rap song in a single day.
On Tuesday (May 7), Chart Data reported that “Not Like Us” had amassed the most streams of any hip-hop song since Spotify’s launch in 2008. The song ironically surpassed the previous record of 6.593 million single-day streams set by Drake’s Lil Baby-assisted Certified Lover Boy single “Girls Want Girls” in 2021.
After releasing three diss tracks in 24 hours, both rappers have gone quiet.
