Eminem has unveiled “Houdini,” the first single from his highly anticipated 12th album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).
Released today, Friday (May 31), the song kicks off with a dose of humor as Eminem’s longtime manager, Paul Rosenberg, expresses doubt about the album in a recorded message: “‘Hey Em, it’s Paul. I was listening to the album… Good f***ing luck, you’re on your own.’”
Eminem’s signature wordplay and clever rhymes are evident as he raps about collaborations, cancel culture, and his alter ego, Slim Shady. The rapper doesn’t shy away from controversy, referencing Megan Thee Stallion’s shooting incident with the lines:
“If I was to ask for Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me/Would I really have a shot at a feat.”
The chorus of “Houdini” pays homage to the Steve Miller Band’s hit “Abracadabra,” adding a touch of nostalgia to the track.
The accompanying music video is a trip down memory lane. It directly references Eminem’s 2002 smash “Without Me,” with Em seemingly stepping into a time portal and revisiting that era.
Shot in a comic book style, the video boasts cameos from Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, and Alchemist. The video cleverly merges two versions of Eminem—the one from 2002 and the current-day artist—rapping along to “Houdini.”
“The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)” is slated for release later this summer, marking Eminem’s 12th studio album and his first since 2020’s “Music to Be Murdered By.” Dr. Dre, Eminem’s longtime collaborator, previously hinted at the project on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, revealing he was already involved with several tracks.
Earlier this week, Eminem announced “Houdini” as the first single in an Instagram Reel with magician David Blaine. “For my last trick, I’m going to make my career disappear,” he told Blaine.
