Terry Funk, a professional wrestler, manager, promoter, and actor known for his hardcore wrestling style and his longevity in the sport, died on Wednesday at the age of 79. Wrestling Legend, Mick Foley, confirmed Funk’s death on social media.
“Terry Funk is gone,” Foley wrote. “I just talked to Terry’s daughter, Brandee, who gave me the awful news. He was my mentor, my idol, one of the closest friends. He was the greatest wrestler I ever saw.
“If you get the chance, look up a Terry Funk match or a Terry Funk promo, and give thanks that this incredible man gave so much, for so long, to so many. There will never be another like him. May God bless Terry, his friends, family and all who loved him. RIP my dear friend – it was an honor to know you. #RIPTerryFunk”
Terry Funk, born Terrence Funk on June 30, 1944, in Amarillo, Texas, began his wrestling career in the 1960s when he followed in the footsteps of his father, Dory Funk Sr., and his older brother, Dory Funk Jr.. Trained rigorously by his family and other seasoned professionals, Funk honed his craft and quickly rose through the ranks.
Renowned for his exceptional ring psychology, rugged brawling style, and unmatched charisma, Funk became a prominent figure in various wrestling promotions, including the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).
He gained international recognition in the 1970s and 1980s, captivating audiences with his intense rivalries and memorable matches. His feud with Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship stands as one of the most iconic in wrestling history.
Funk’s willingness to take risks and his penchant for pushing the boundaries of the sport led to his involvement in groundbreaking matches. He was part of the first-ever “empty arena” match in 1981 against Jerry Lawler and introduced elements of hardcore wrestling that would later become a staple in the industry. Throughout his career, Funk captured numerous championships and accolades: He was a two-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion and a one-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion.
Funk was also a successful actor, appearing in films films such as “Road House” and “Over the Top.” He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004 and retired in 2017.
Terry Funk’s Cause Of Death
Terry Funk’s cause of death has not been publicly released at this time. However, it is known that he had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for many years.
Funk’s death was met with widespread tributes from the wrestling world. WWE called him “one of the most innovative and influential wrestlers of all time”. NWA President Billy Corgan said that Funk was “a true legend”.
“In My Entire Life,” Ric Flair said in revealing the passing of his good pal, “I’ve Never Met A Guy Who Worked Harder. Terry Funk Was A Great Wrestler, Entertainer, Unbelievably Fearless, And A Great Friend! No One Will Ever Replace You In The World Of Professional Wrestling!” Flair added in his statement Wednesday. “Rest In Peace My Friend.”
His brother Dory Funk Jr. wrote, “My Brother Terry Funk was all in with life and Loved pro wrestling and his fans- Terry has been Blessed with 2beautiful loving and supportive daughters All my Love to my brother Terry.”
14-time World champion, Triple H said, “Every night in cities all over the world, Terry Funk left it all in the ring for our business and for the fans. An icon of our industry. My thoughts are with Terry’s family, friends and fans.”
“The National Wrestling Alliance is saddened to hear of the passing of former Worlds Heavyweight Champion Terry Funk. Our thoughts are with our fellow fans, friends and family as tonight we remember one of the greats. Terry Funk Forever.”
“Terry Funk was a truly unique performer for the ages that inspired and influenced so many, myself included. There was a passion and a sense of chaos in his work that was so beautiful to watch. My condolences to his friends and family. RIP,” wrote WWE superstar Sami Zayn.
