Some fourteen years after release, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter 3 hit single “Lollipop” has been certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America. The auto-tune influenced song crossed ten million sales on Wednesday (Dec. 14) thanks to a new viral #Lollipopchallenge on TikTok.
An overjoyed Lil Wayne reacted to the first Diamond plaque of his career with an appreciative video message to his millions of fans.
“Lollipop, my first Diamond record. Certified,” he said in a TikTok video before pointing out the milestone was achieved with sales and not streams. “10 million singles sold, not streams.”
“My first Diamond record, 10 million singles sold,” he reiterated. “That’s a lot of people. I appreciate every single one of you. I swear to God.”
Wayne also sent out a special RIP to the song’s collaborator Static Major, who died from health complications sixteen days before the song was released.
“Lollipop” was released as the first single from Lil Wayne’s 2008 now classic album Tha Carter III. The song produced by Deezie and Jim Jonain spent a total of five non-consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and officially kicked off the ringtone era of rap singles.
Meanwhile, “Tha Carter 3” featuring cameos from Jay-Z, T-Pain, Fabolous, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes and more sold one million records in just a week.
